Clinic backs Diathermy for permanent hair removal

Dublin clinic, The Wicklow Street Clinic, is promoting Diathermy as a permanent solution for removing excess facial or body hair.

For many, unwanted facial and body hair can be a very stressful side effect of hormonal imbalances like PCOS. Some people are just conscious of excessive hair which grows naturally on the face and body.

An evolved version of electrolysis, Diathermy completely removes the hair follicle meaning that the hair will never grow back. A specialty of The Wicklow Street Clinic, Diathermy has been used since the 1950s, and involves inserting a tiny needle, smaller than most hairs, into the hair follicle, which is a hollow shaft. A small amount of Diathermy, which feels like a tiny burst of heat, is released into the follicle cauterising the tiny blood vessels supplying the hair and separating the dead hair from its base. The hair is then gently removed. The treatment is said to be painless for clients.

Diathermy is suitable for male and female clients, and on most areas of the body. The most popular areas are upper lip and chin, neck, sides of face, breast area and tummy; it can also be used on ears, brows, the hairline and on men's collar lines.

There is a perception, say the Clinic, that Laser has taken over as the number one permanent method of hair removal. However, the drawback of Laser is that its effectiveness is subject to hormonal changes, whilst Diathermy is not.

The Clinic also notes that Laser does not work well on light hair, such as red or blonde hair, because the beam needs colour in most cases to pick up the hair.

Because the hair follicle is completely removed, there is no chance of more hair growing back due to hormonal issues, and therefore Diathermy is the only hair removal system to be granted the title ‘permanent' by the FDA, whilst Laser is technically described as permanent hair management or reduction.

The Wicklow Street Clinic is located on 13 Wicklow Street, Dublin 2.
